Recruitment process

Join the Marietta Police DepartmentThe following describes the application and examination process for the position of Sworn Police Officer with the City of Marietta.

  1. Pre-Screener Questionnaire
    To determine if you are a viable candidate for the position of police officer with the City of Marietta. Complete the online questionnaire.
  2. Submit Application
    Submit your application for employment only when the Marietta Police Department is recruiting. An application is available for download upon completion of the pre-application questionnaire above.
  3. Agility
    Successful candidates to this point will be scheduled for an agility and flexibility test at Health Place.
  4. Applicant Testing
    Tests are given at the Marietta Fire Department. Applicants are required to show photo ID at any test session. No one is admitted to any test session without a photo ID. Late arrivals will not be admitted to the test. NO EXCEPTIONS. Tests are taken on computer. The computerized test is approximately one-and-a-half hours in length. Allow about three hours of time for the complete session. Scores are available immediately. Those who pass the test will be issued a background booklet. Out-of-town applicants will be advised whether they should plan to stay overnight to participate in the Oral Board interviews. More information
  5. Background Check
    The candidates' applications, background booklets, and criminal and credit histories will be reviewed and ranked by Police Department staff.
  6. Oral Interview
    This is a group interview with five police officers of various ranks. This interview will not occur until, and as, vacancies exist. The candidates are either recommended for further consideration or not recommended for further consideration. Interview times for the Oral Board will be set up by Police Department staff. Business attire is mandatory for the oral board interview.
  7. Offer of Employment
    If successful through the above steps and a vacancy exists, the candidate will be made an offer of employment conditional upon successful completion of the following steps.
  8. Polygraph
    This is to verify information that the candidate has provided and to confirm compliance with police officer standards. Candidates are asked about their employment history, illegal drug use history, criminal history, driver's license record and military history. This test will not screen out individuals by itself.
  9. Psychological Evaluation
    Written portions of psychological testing are administered by a licensed psychologist at their office. This part of the evaluation takes approximately 4-5 hours. The psychologist will review results of written tests and interview candidate. This interview should take approximately 1 hour.
  10. Physical & Drug Screen
    Successful candidates to this point will be scheduled for a physical and drug screen.
  11. Entrance Exam for Law Enforcement Academy
    All applicants must pass the entrance exam for Police Academy training to proceed further in the hiring process.
  12. Interview With Chief
    Personal interview with recommended candidates. Chief Flynn ranks candidates after interviews.
  13. Hired
    Candidates are then employed, issued rules and regulations, department policy and procedures manuals. A police academy attendance date is scheduled. Orientation is scheduled with the City's Personnel Department. After graduation from the academy (10 weeks), officer is fitted for uniforms, assigned to the field training program. Officer is evaluated and tested by each assigned FTO (Field Training Officer). After granted "solo" status, the officer is assigned a shift.

Duration of Process

There are many factors that make a clear definition of the amount of time necessary to complete the selection process impossible to predict (i.e. available openings, number of applicants, scheduling considerations, etc.). For that reason, candidates who have questions about the duration of the process should contact the appropriate police representative.

Re-application

Candidates who do not complete the process or who are not hired may re-apply after 6 months for any future openings. In such case, candidates must complete the entire process again.
